I moved to the Ryde area over 10 years ago with my wife when we got married.
I was looking for a sport that I could do that would keep me fit but was also easy on my body after many years playing rugby. Over the years, I've tried swimming, running & tennis to name a few. I was introduced to cycling by my mate Anthony. He got me to come out cycling with him on my mountain bike around Sydney Olympic Park and over time I've progressed to road cycling as my fitness improved.
Earlier this year, I was asked to come on a ride with my mate Paul to Bobbin Head and back. Part of this ride was introducing me to Parklife Cycling Club (PLCC) which Paul was a member of. On my first ride with the club they made me feel very welcome and I wasn't even a member.
On this ride I crashed my bike coming out of Bobbin Head. I lost a little bit of bark and my pride was dented. The ride leader, Russell, made sure I was okay and reassured me that everyone has a fall every once in a while, which was reassuring.
From this crash, I decided to join the club as they were concerned about me and they were happy for me to ride as much or as little as I wanted. Since joining, I've realised that there are a number of other riders in the same predicament as me. We love riding, but don't have as many hours free to cycle due to family and other commitments.
PLCC introduced me to their intermediate ride, which takes place each Saturday morning. In this ride we usual cycle around 50 kms in a group of around 10 - 20 people. It's not just about cycling, it's about getting to know other people and having a laugh, as well as the obligatory coffee!!
